The new masks X-Ray column is opened by the Salvimar Noah.

Already deeply analyzed by AP in the presentation article on the new 2016 masks by Salvimar, the Noah is the extremely new top of the line product by the Company of Casarza Ligure, near Genova, Liguria region, Italy. The mask has already been very much appreciated by customers, as confirmed by the commercial results of the beginning of 2016.

In brief

Noah is designed and manufactured with the particular construction of the silicone facial glued to the lens and chassis, a very complex procedure, that offers remarkable advantages in the reduction of internal volume, which determines a reduced necessity of equalizing the mask, and a minor distance between the lens and the eyes, with a considerable improvement of the field of view. Test in the sea

Tested in the sea at different depths, the Noah has immediately appeared as very comfortable, also after many hours, thanks to a soft, but not excessively, silicone. Moreover, the water tightness, even though linked also to the shape of each face, has been almost impeccable.

The reduced internal volume permits to equalize the mask very few times: on average once before 15 meters and a second one to reach 20 meters.

Impressive is the field of view, impossible with a traditional removable chassis solution. The glued internal chassis permits, in fact, both to bring the lens closer to the eyes and to eliminate all the frame generated by the external chassis, which would cover indicatively 1mm all around the lenses. Practically, Noah has no blind angles in any direction, where the edge of the mask is slightly visible looking above and down left and right, but with negligible effects on visibility.

Excellent is the soft band that, thanks to the wide shape, permits the insertion of the tube of the mouthpiece between the two bands at the rear of the head, a position which is very useful to avoid vibrations (fastidious and noisy) of this component, important especially during descent. The choice of the mouthpiece is also central, with its comfortable shape and softness. The short version, a solution that helps breathing and reduces the dead part of the tube where breathed air stagnates, is not a good choice with rough sea, as waves tend to enter in the tube. In such situation, it is better to choose the longer version mouthpiece.

Measure of internal volume

After the test in the sea, AP has made a scientific measure of the internal volume of the mask, test that will be repeated in the same way for different Salvimar and other important companies masks.

To obtain the correct measure the head of a dummy has been used, which has been considered the standard shape. Said that, we need to remember that the measured values are specific for such shape, and so they are not valid overall and slightly different from head to head. Important will be the values between different masks: if the internal volume of a mask will be less than the one of another, we will be able to confirm with good precision that the first mask has a smaller internal volume of a certain quantity compared to the second, even using various faces of real people.

Proceeding with the measuring, the Noah has so been positioned on the face of the dummy, well tightening the rear band, in a way that the mask could adhere perfectly. At this point, after having well sealed the lower part of the mask with an isolating tape, to help water tightness of the polystyrene, which is not so good, a small transparent rubber tube has been inserted at the top of the mask, inside the lip that goes on the forehead. Using a 60 ml graded siringe, water has been injected in the mask. After the first 60 ml, the siringe has been filled with another 60 ml and injection in the mask has continued. Process has been interrupted in the moment that water has reached the upper lip of the facial of the mask, where the tube had been inserted. At this point, the internal volume has been calculated subtracting the quantity of water left in the siringe to 120 ml, equal to two full syringes.

At the end of the measuring, repeated twice, the volume of the Noah has been measured equal to 94 ml, an incredibly low value, also taking into consideration values of a number of masks of competitors, masks that AP has already analyzed and whose articles will be published in the next weeks. Such value of 94 ml positions the Noah in first position among all masks taken into account.  

Visibility test

With the aim to always analyze scientifically all results of tests in the sea, which is part of the mission of AP, we have proceeded in a study of the visibility of the Noah through an innovative system to survey the field of view. Utilizing a second dummy, a socket at the height of the face has been made to position a GO-PRO camera, where the lens of the camera has been set at the height of the left eye of the dummy. The Noah has been then positioned on the head, still well tightening the rear band so that the lenses were as close as possible to the camera.

Once defined the position of the lens of the camera respect to the left lens of the mask, the head of the dummy has been positioned in front of a target for archery. The position of the dummy, meaning the distance between the lens of the mask from the target, has been set to a fixed value, sticking the dummy with bi-adhesive tape. In such a way all tests of masks have been and will be brought forward with identical parameters. Target has been completed with values from 0 (the center) to 100. After that, a few shots have been taken with the camera, immortalizing the field of view framed by the GO-PRO, meaning the one that the spearo, or freediver, would see.

To be able to view the entire frame of the lens of the mask, the position of the camera has had to be positioned 5 mm behind respect to the eyes of the dummy. This means that the images shot do not show exactly the field of view of the diver, but a slightly narrower view. So, also here, as for the internal volume, the comparison between masks will be crucial, where the mask with greater field of view will be the one that, also in reality, will have the highest value of visibility.

Field of view of Salvimar Noah

Once the photograph with the camera has been shot, next step has been to observe the field of view in the 4 cardinal points and their 4 intermediate points: North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West, West and North-West. Noah, also in comparison with a number of other masks analyzed by AP, has resulted to be the second best of the lot for what concerns the field of view. There is also no weak direction in the 8 evaluated. The numeric results obtained, to be compared with the next tests that will be published by AP, are:

North: 70, North-East: 75, East: 50, South-East: 55, South: 70, South-West: 60, West: 65, North-West: 85, for a final vote equal to 530. 

Final votes

The Noah results from the test as an amazing product, for innovation, reduced internal volume and great field of view. There seems nothing is missing, as the votes chart confirms. We will need to verify with a duration test the strength of the critical gluing system of the facial-lens-frame system, that Salvimar guarantees as very reliable.
